Squad 20

1996 Pierce Saber

Squad 20 is powered by a Detroit Diesel Series 40, 530 cubic inch displacement rated at 300 horsepower. The engine is coupled to an Allison World transmission MD3060.This transmission is electronically controlled for optimum performance and smooth application of power. The transmission range is actually selected by the use of a keypad. Squad 20's job is to bring heavy rescue capability to the scene of any incident whether it is a fire, car accident, building collapse, or other disaster. Squad carries the latest equipment available to provide maximum rescue effort. These include the Hurst tool, Jaws of Life, with a spreading force of 18000 pounds. Hurst tool cutter capable of cutting a wide range of materials, with a cutting force between 25000 and 70000 pounds of force. Hurst tool extending rams, capable of lifting or supporting loads of 15000 pounds up to sixty inches. Maxiforce air bags are another tool carried on this vehicle. This system has a lifting capability in excess of twenty tons. In addition to the above Squad 20 also carries a compressed air system and the power generating system. The air system consists of four 6000-psi air tanks, a complete distribution system, and a booster pump, which allows greater use of stored air remaining in the tanks. The air system is primarily used for refilling empty self-contained breathing apparatus bottles, however it can be used in conjunction with other systems. The electrical generator is a state of the art system capable of delivering 25000 watts of power continuously at the flip of a switch. The vehicle engine provides input power to drive the on board generator. Electrical power is used for a variety of tools, lights, fans and pumps. For night operations the Nightscan floodlight can be deployed, which virtually turns night into day. This system uses four 1500 watt lamps mounted on an air operated telescoping mast that when fully extended rises fifteen feet above the top of the truck.
