Battalion 20
Battalion 20 Command Van
Battalion 20 is a 1994 Ford Econoline 150 powered by a fuel injected 5.0 liter
engine. This truck is available to any of the three shift Commanders or Lieutenants
to respond to calls during their shifts. While on the scene of an incident, Battalion
20 provides a space for the incident commander to supervise, observe, and direct
his crews from an office-like environment. The interior is fitted with two workstations
consisting of office chairs, desk space, special lighting, and storage cabinets.
The driver’s location and both workstations have separate radios so more than
one person can transmit on different frequencies simultaneously. A mobile telephone
is also available for use with an extra extension in the rear workspace. Also
while on the scene, the incident commander tracks assignments of units and personnel
with various organizational aids. These aids include boards to list companies
committed to tasks and unassigned companies staging areas. A passport system is
used to track individual personal so safety and accountability are increased.
Other support equipment carried includes photographic equipment, such as video
and still cameras. Other special instruments detect heat sources, hydrogen sulfide,
carbon monoxide, explosive limits of combustible atmospheres, and oxygen. This
unit carries self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for incident commander
to wear if he is required to enter a hazardous environment.
