Fire Prevention

Through its Fire Prevention Bureau, the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District delivers a comprehensive approach to community risk reduction, focused on the protection of life and property through education, inspection, investigation, and code enforcement. The Bureau’s mission is to advance the science and practice of fire prevention and life safety within the community, accomplished through a balanced approach of education, inspection, and enforcement.

The Bureau provides a range of essential services, including:

• Public education programs that promote fire safety awareness and preparedness
• Building plan reviews to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes
• Fire and life safety inspections of commercial, educational, and multi-family occupancies
• Fire cause and origin investigations to support prevention efforts
• Hydrant flow testing to verify adequate water supply
• Oversight of fire protection systems and compliance documentation

Fire Prevention Bureau personnel are assigned Monday through Friday during normal business hours. While primarily dedicated to fire prevention activities, they maintain certifications as firefighters and paramedics, remain operationally ready, respond to emergency incidents as needed, and train regularly alongside suppression personnel to ensure seamless integration between prevention and operations.

A key component of the Bureau’s mission is its school-based fire safety education programming, providing age-appropriate instruction on fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and safe evacuation practices. The Bureau also conducts fire drills, community outreach, and works with residents and businesses to promote fire-safe environments.
